We plan to visit the following three places.
Eiheiji Temple(永平寺)
Lunch at Kagetsu-Rou (花月楼)
Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (福井県立恐竜博物館)

Eiheiji Temple

Eiheiji temple, established in 1244, is a very popular destination, and some of you may have already visited this place. However, very few of you have seen the temple covered by white snow!

Eiheiji is still an active training place for Buddhist priesthood. You can find lots of priests training in the temple, but please do not take a picture of them. It is prohibited. Dogen(道元)who opened this temple emphasized the importance of training as a Tenzo(典座), who prepares meals for all the monks. I have heard that Tenzo starts to prepare breakfast, by getting up at 2:00 am in the morning. (Is 2:00 am morning or night?) They have a big dining room consisting of 150 tatami mats. (The size of a tatami mat is about 1.8 m x 0.9 m.) They take a bath only the days with 4 or 9 (every 5 days). Taking a bath is also considered as a part of training, and the conversation is totally forbidden. How about knowing about a completely different lifestyle?

Lunch at Kagetsu-Rou

“Kagetsu-Rou(花月楼)” is a historical old Japanese restaurant, built more than 110 years ago and is registered as a tangible cultural property. The building was renovated and opened as a restaurant again in April, 2017. The dining room has an impressive umbrella-shaped ceiling, which can be seen in the slide show at

After lunch, we plan to enjoy the song and dance of a traditional Japanese festival called “Sagicho”. The Sagicho Festival in this city (Katsuyama) has been held in February since 300 years ago.

Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum

https://www.dinosaur.pref.fukui.jp
There are well-known excavating sites for the dinosaur fossils in Fukui, and we have a dinosaur museum. Although the names of dinosaurs are complicated, but don’t worry! The audio tour system is available in English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. You can enjoy a self-guided tour with this system, if you want to. You can be a Doctor of Dinosaurs in a day. Of course, just strolling around the ancient earth with dinosaurs will be a fun.

The Dinosaur Museum is located in Katsuyama-city, Fukui prefecture, which is about 1 h drive from Fukui-city. Katsuyama is sometimes called “Aspen of Japan”. Because I have never been to Aspen, I cannot tell the similarities. Anyway, you can enjoy gorgeous scenery of snow mountains, if the weather permits.

Around the JR Fukui station, there are lots of statues and pictures of dinosaurs. Please explore and find them during the symposium.
